about
FORCED LABOUR
The subject of forced labour is closely linked to the life and work of Ágnes Lukács. It is well known that the Nazi regime installed one of the largest forced labour systems in history: over twenty million foreign civilian workers, concentration camp prisoners and prisoners of war from all occupied countries were forced to work.
"Forced labourers were used everywhere - in armaments factories as well as on construction sites, in agriculture, in the trades or in private households. Everyone in the population encountered them - whether as an occupying soldier in Poland or as a farmer's wife in Thuringia." (Quote from the explanation of the travelling exhibition "Forced Labour") Forced labour was also used as a form of exploitation and extermination of prisoners in the concentration camps where the artist was interned.
FORCED LABOUR and works by Burkhard Schittny
Burkhard Schittny (www.schittny.de) addressed the topic of forced labour for the first time in 2019 as part of his "Legacy Projects" group of works and has created various installations, films and typographical works over the years.
In an exhibition, his works listed here can be shown independently or in a dialogue with Ágnes Lukács' works:
